Jammu Kashmir Arms Licence Scam: GoI sanctions the Prosecution of an IAS Officer
SRINAGAR: The Government of India has granted sanction for the prosecution of Kumar Rajeev Ranjan, an IAS officer of the erstwhile cadre of Jammu & Kashmir, for his alleged involvement in the infamous arms licence scam.
According to a communiqué, the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), Ministry of Personnel and Training, has informed Vishal Sharma, Deputy Solicitor General of India, of the sanction granted for Ranjan’s prosecution in a case registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in 2018.
“I am directed to refer to your email dated 23.12.2024 on the subject mentioned above and to state that an order, granting sanction against Kumar Rajeev Ranjan, IAS, in CBI RCCHGO51201850007 under section 6 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 2006 (1949 A.D.), for alleged offences under section 5(2) PC Act, 2006 (1949 A.D.), has already been issued on 28.11.2004 with the approval of the competent authority,” the communiqué states.
It is noteworthy that a large-scale arms licence scam involving deputy magistrates of Jammu & Kashmir came to light through an investigation by the Rajasthan Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) in 2017.
The case was initially investigated by the J&K Police before being transferred to the CBI by the then Governor, N. N. Vohra.
The investigation revealed that bulk arms licences were issued to non-residents on forged documents by deputy magistrates in Jammu & Kashmir.
Between 2012 and 2016, deputy commissioners of various districts in J&K had allegedly issued fraudulent and illegal arms licences in exchange for monetary considerations, according to the findings of the probe. (KNO)
