J-k SC Approves Article 370 Abrogation, Hosts Key G20 Meeting in the Valley
The past year marked a significant period for Jammu and Kashmir, witnessing the Supreme Court’s approval of the revocation of its special status and the division of the erstwhile state into two union territories. Additionally, the Narendra Modi-led government achieved a diplomatic victory by hosting a pivotal G20 meeting in the Kashmir Valley.
Despite these developments, the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly elections did not take place, and the urban local body and panchayat polls scheduled for the winter were postponed. The BJP-led Centre received substantial support when a five-judge Supreme Court bench upheld the government’s decision in August 2019 to revoke Jammu and Kashmir’s special status under Article 370 of the Constitution.
Regional parties such as the National Conference and the PDP, who opposed the Article 370 abrogation, remain committed to their struggle for the restoration of special status. PDP President Mehbooba Mufti expressed disappointment with the Supreme Court verdict, emphasizing that it does not equate to divine judgment and characterizing the decision as unconstitutional and detrimental to the idea of India.
Omar Abdullah of the National Conference asserted readiness for a prolonged struggle, while Ghulam Nabi Azad, chairperson of the Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP), deemed the Supreme Court verdict “sad and unfortunate,” emphasizing the need to accept it with a heavy heart.
Interestingly, the general public responded minimally to the Supreme Court decision, continuing with their daily lives. Meanwhile, the BJP celebrated the verdict, having earned favor by hosting a G20 meeting on tourism in Srinagar, contributing to the city’s development with new landmarks, a renovated Clock Tower, and the introduction of electric buses and e-rickshaws.
Despite positive strides, criticism arose due to the delay in holding elections to various bodies. The security situation in Kashmir improved overall, but targeted attacks by terrorists on minority community members and security forces persisted. Major incidents included attacks in Poonch, Rajouri, and the Kashmir Valley, resulting in casualties among soldiers and civilians.
As the year concluded, the challenges and successes in Jammu and Kashmir reflect a complex and evolving landscape, where political, security, and developmental considerations continue to shape the region’s trajectory.
