Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chairman, S. Somnath, has announced the successful recovery of the crew module from the Gaganyaan mission’s test vehicle, marking a crucial milestone in India’s space exploration efforts.

Test Flight of TV-D1 for Gaganyaan Mission

ISRO conducted the first test flight of ‘TV-D1’ (Test Vehicle Development Flight 1) at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Andhra Pradesh’s Sriharikota. Although the mission experienced an early abort due to an engine ignition issue, its primary objective was to demonstrate the crew escape system for the upcoming Gaganyaan program.

    A Step Toward Human Spaceflight

The TV-D1 test involved evaluating various subsystems, the Crew Escape System (CES), crew module characteristics, and a deceleration system demonstration at higher altitudes. It simulated an abort condition during the ascent trajectory, providing crucial data for India’s human spaceflight capabilities.

This achievement reinforces India’s ambition to demonstrate its capacity to send humans into space, an effort that would make it the fourth nation in the world, after the United States, Russia, and China, to successfully launch a manned spaceflight mission.
