ISRO tests liquid rocket engine made with additive manufacturing tech
New Delhi [India], May 10 (ANI): The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) achieved a milestone with the successful hot testing of a liquid rocket engine produced using Additive Manufacturing (AM) technology.
The test, which took place on May 9, 2024, lasted for an impressive 665 seconds, demonstrating the reliability and durability of this new manufacturing approach. The engine tested is the PS4 engine used in the upper stage of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV).
In a post on X, ISRO highlighted the breakthrough achieved with this test. “Design & Manufacturing Breakthrough: ISRO successfully conducts a long-duration test of the PS4 engine, re-designed for production using cutting-edge additive manufacturing techniques and crafted in the Indian industry,” ISRO stated. The benefits of this redesign are substantial.
According to ISRO, the new engine design, now a single piece, reduces raw material usage by 97% and cuts production time by 60%. This marks a significant advancement in the field of rocket engine manufacturing and has the potential to accelerate ISRO’s satellite launch capabilities.”The new engine, now a single piece, saves 97% of raw materials and reduces production time by 60%,” the post added.
