ISRO Faces Over 100 Daily Cyberattacks, Emphasizes Cybersecurity Vigilance
Guarding India’s Space Pioneers
S Somanath, the Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), has revealed that the country’s premier space agency faces a constant barrage of cyberattacks, tallying over 100 attacks daily. Speaking at the conclusion of the 16th edition of c0c0n, an international cyber conference in Kerala’s Kochi, Somanath underscored the significance of cybersecurity, particularly in the realm of rocket technology, which relies heavily on cutting-edge software and chip-based hardware.
Relentless Cyber Threats
The staggering revelation of more than 100 daily cyberattacks highlights the critical need for robust cybersecurity measures within ISRO. The organization’s technological prowess and its reliance on modern software and hardware in rocket technology make it an attractive target for malicious actors.
Somanath assured that ISRO is well-prepared to counter these threats with a resilient cybersecurity network in place.
Hardware and Software Vigilance
Beyond software security, ISRO is also investing in tests to ensure the safety and integrity of the hardware components within its rockets. The modernization of satellite monitoring, from single satellite oversight to the simultaneous management of multiple satellites through software, signifies the rapid growth of the space sector.
Somanath noted the significance of satellites in various domains, including navigation, maintenance, and everyday life. These satellites rely on various types of software, emphasizing the importance of cybersecurity to safeguard these critical assets.
Technology as a Double-Edged Sword
Somanath acknowledged the dual nature of advanced technology as both a boon and a potential threat. While it provides numerous benefits, it also exposes organizations to new challenges, especially in the context of cybersecurity.
He stressed the importance of leveraging technology, including artificial intelligence, to counter the challenges posed by cybercriminals. Research and hard work are crucial in this endeavor.
Kerala’s Role in Cybersecurity
Kerala Revenue Minister P Rajeev, who inaugurated the conference’s concluding session, highlighted Kerala’s exemplary role in cybersecurity governance. The state government’s commitment to ensuring cybersecurity and the establishment of the Digital University reflect its dedication to this critical sector.
Rajeev praised c0c0n as a model for the Indian cybersecurity sector, fostering innovation and nurturing the next generation of cybersecurity experts.
The event also saw the presence of prominent figures, including Hibi Eden MP, Mayor M Anilkumar, actor Mamta Mohandas, Intelligence ADGP Manoj Abraham IPS, and ISRA President Manu Zacharia.
