ISRO Chairman Advocates Greater Female Representation in Space Missions

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman S. Somanath has expressed a strong desire to see increased female participation in the country’s space missions, aligning his sentiments with those of the nation and even the Prime Minister. During an event at the Pournami Kavu temple, where Somanath initiated children into the world of learning as part of the Vidyarambam ceremony on Vijayadasami, he shared his expectation to witness more female astronauts in ISRO’s ambitious Gaganyaan mission.

Optimism for the Future

Somanath clarified that, as astronauts had already been selected and trained for Gaganyaan’s inaugural mission, involving women astronauts might not be feasible. However, he remained optimistic about the potential for greater female involvement in future Gaganyaan missions. He stated, “More women astronauts in space missions are part of my wish list, and I only echoed the voice of the nation, including that of the Prime Minister.

ISRO’s Vision for Women in Space

ISRO is actively working toward involving more women in its human space flight program, Gaganyaan. The organization has expressed a preference for female fighter test pilots and female scientists for the program. ISRO plans to send a female humanoid, a robot resembling a human, on its unmanned Gaganyaan spacecraft next year. This ambitious mission aims to send humans into space for a Low Earth Orbit of 400 km for three days, bringing them safely back to Earth.

Spiritual Blessing and Education

Acknowledging his spiritual inclination, S. Somanath participated in prayers on Vijayadasami day. After completing his prayers at the temple, he spent over 30 minutes assisting toddlers in writing their first letters, marking the beginning of their educational journey. Somanath emphasized that the ceremony is not religious but symbolic, representing the initiation of education. He mentioned that alphabets are worshipped in the temple, signifying knowledge.

On Vijayadasami, children are introduced to the world of knowledge by their gurus, and this knowledge transfer is considered a blessing. Somanath believes that this blessing of spirituality from the gurus to the children aids in their understanding of the universe.Former ISRO Chairman G. Madhavan Nair and Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre Director Unnikrishnan were also present at Pournami Kavu to assist children with Vidyarambam.
