Israeli Forces Order Immediate Evacuation of Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza
In a dramatic escalation of tensions, Israeli forces issued an urgent directive on Saturday, compelling the immediate evacuation of Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza within the next hour. The order, conveyed to the hospital’s director, Mohammed Abu Salmiya, specified the evacuation of patients, the wounded, displaced individuals, and medical staff, emphasizing a journey on foot towards the seafront.
Alleged Hamas Presence Prompts Evacuation Order
This evacuation order follows an incident two days earlier when Israeli troops meticulously combed the hospital, claiming to have unearthed a Hamas tunnel shaft and a vehicle laden with weapons within the complex. The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) released a video purportedly showing a tunnel entrance in an outdoor area of Gaza’s largest hospital, though the video’s authenticity remains unverified.
Al-Shifa Hospital Struggles Amidst Ongoing Israel-Hamas Conflict
As the Israel-Hamas conflict enters its seventh week, Al-Shifa hospital finds itself at the forefront of the battle. Plagued by power cuts due to fuel shortages, the hospital has become a symbol of the humanitarian crisis. The Hamas health ministry reports numerous casualties at the hospital, attributing them to power outages. Despite previous evacuation calls by Israel, medical professionals argue that the movement of patients is impractical.
Amidst the turmoil, the United Nations discloses that around 2,300 patients, staff, and displaced individuals sought refuge in the hospital before the Israeli incursion on Wednesday. Meanwhile, a doctor from Al-Shifa hospital reveals a dire shortage of food and water, describing the supplies provided by the Israeli military as “very minimal” and insufficient to meet the needs of the beleaguered population.
