Ireland Seeks Closer Cooperation with India Amid Expanded Asia-Pacific Strategy

As Ireland expands its diplomatic presence in Asia and the Pacific, there is a strong focus on nurturing its cultural and political ties with India. This includes enhancing cooperation in trade, investment, and the digital transition. Ireland’s Deputy Prime Minister, Micheál Martin, unveiled an updated Asia-Pacific strategy, emphasizing the importance of deepening the strategic relationship with India, strengthening political contacts, and fostering a deeper trade and investment partnership.

Building on Historical Ties

The historical and cultural bonds between India and Ireland form a foundation for this strengthened relationship. Recent years have seen the entry of Indian companies like Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) into Ireland, creating a platform for economic and cultural collaboration.

While emphasizing cooperation with India, Ireland remains “clear-eyed” about its relationship with China. The focus is on addressing global challenges such as climate change while also addressing differences and challenges stemming from China’s border disputes across the region.

Resolving Border Disputes and Regional Stability

Micheál Martin stressed the importance of establishing frameworks to resolve border disputes, ensuring they do not disrupt broader regional relationships. He highlighted the role of regional groupings in Asia as key to regional stability and strength, as individual countries working alone may have limited capacity and security.

Ireland’s refreshed Asia-Pacific strategy aligns with the EU’s efforts to collaborate with India and China in addressing climate change. It also includes plans for training senior Indian officials, expanding fintech exports to the region, and tapping into opportunities in Asian financial markets. Irish agencies like IDA Ireland and Enterprise Ireland are working to diversify investments, with top Indian firms seen as potential key investors.

Indian Community and Education

With a substantial Indian-origin population, Ireland is home to over 61,000 people of Indian descent. The community plays a significant role in various sectors, including healthcare, IT, engineering, and senior management. Additionally, the number of Indian students in Ireland has increased, thanks to visa schemes that allow them to work and study in the country.
