Iran lifts ban on WhatsApp and Google Play; hijab law paused

In a major bid against internet restrictions, Iran has lifted the ban on the meta-owned platform X and Google Play, as reported by Reuters, while quoting the IRNA—Iran’s state media.

As Iran has some of the harshest internet controls in the world, the Iranians still bypass the social media platforms via Virtual Private Network (VPN).

Sattar Hashmi, who heads the Information & Communications department, stated this development as the first step in removing the internet limitation.

As Iran faced widespread anti-government protests, in which social media platforms were used. In September, the United States has called on Big Tech to escape the censorship in countries.

Also, on December 18, Iran paused the process of implementing a new and stricter law on hijab, as per the Associated Press. This was approved by the Iranian Parliament but was not sent to the government.
