iPhone 16 series meets sales expectations, low demand for base models: Kuo

Apple launched its iPhone 16 series in September 2024 at a special event at Apple Park, California. The new lineup features a powerful A18 chipset family, an enhanced design, the addition of an Action button on all models, and a dedicated Camera Control button. These improvements have contributed to the iPhone 16 series meeting Apple’s sales expectations.

iPhone 16 Sales Performance

According to TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the iPhone 16 series, especially the Pro models, is performing well in terms of sales. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Kuo revealed that the demand for the iPhone 16 Pro models has met expectations, and assembly orders remain stable. Suppliers were even asked to continue production during China’s National Day holiday, reflecting strong demand for these high-end models.

However, the base models — iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus — have seen weaker demand. As a result, Apple has reduced component orders for these models by 3-5% starting from mid-November 2024.

iPhone 16 Shipment and Production

Despite some sluggishness in the base models, Kuo’s report indicates that overall iPhone 16 production is expected to reach 88-89 million units in Q4 of 2024. This figure is slightly lower than the iPhone 15 series, which saw production numbers between 90-91 million units. The iPhone 16 Pro models, in particular, are enjoying success similar to the iPhone 15 Pro from last year, with shorter shipping times than its predecessor.

AI Features and Future Focus

Looking ahead, Apple’s focus is expected to shift toward the US market as the company prepares to roll out Apple Intelligence, its AI suite for iPhones and other devices. The AI features will be available with the iOS 18.1 update, speculated to be released on October 28, 2024.

While production numbers may be slightly lower than last year, Apple’s strong performance with the iPhone 16 Pro models keeps its overall sales outlook positive.
