IndiGo Clarifies Web Check-In Not Mandatory, Recommends Hassle-Free Experience
IndiGo, responding to a surge in passenger complaints related to web check-in, announced on Saturday that the process is “not mandatory.” However, the airline strongly advised its passengers to use web check-in in advance to ensure a “hassle-free” flight experience. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), IndiGo emphasized that web check-in can significantly improve the airport experience for customers.
Government to Address Passenger Concerns on Web Check-In
This clarification from IndiGo comes in the wake of numerous complaints received by the Indian government about airlines displaying every seat as paid, even when web check-in is mandated. To address these concerns, the government has called for a meeting on November 8, bringing together senior officials from all airlines and travel portals to discuss passenger grievances.

Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh revealed that over the past year, the government’s National Consumer Helpline received approximately 10,000 complaints related to the airline sector. About half of these complaints centered on issues such as “ticket cancellations without receiving a refund from airlines.” Another significant grievance was airlines listing every seat as paid, despite the supposed availability of free mandatory web check-in. Singh emphasized that these complaints are just the tip of the iceberg and highlighted the need for airlines to ensure fair and consumer-friendly services once a confirmed ticket is issued.
The ministry clarified that it does not interfere with the business models of airlines or travel companies. However, it emphasized that when a consumer holds a confirmed ticket, they should not face further inconveniences, such as being required to pay for seats, which can make air travel more challenging.
Web check-in is typically available 48 hours to 60 minutes before domestic flight departure and 24 hours to 75 minutes before international flight departure. For those who prefer airport check-in at the counter, this option is available 60 minutes before domestic flight departure and 75 minutes before international flight departure.
