India’s Steady Relationship with Russia Amidst Changing Dynamics
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar discussed India’s diplomatic ties with Russia, emphasizing the stability of their relationship even as global dynamics shift. Speaking at the Hudson Institute, he predicted that Russia would pivot towards Asia due to deteriorating relations with the West.
Steadfast, if Not Spectacular
Jaishankar acknowledged that while India’s relationship with Russia may not be considered “spectacular,” it has remained remarkably steady over the years. Despite global turbulence, the two nations have maintained a consistent diplomatic rapport.
Russia’s Shifting Focus
Commenting on Russia’s evolving global position amidst the ongoing Ukraine conflict, Jaishankar noted that Russia’s ties with the West have frayed significantly. As a consequence, he predicted that Russia would redirect its focus towards Asia, a region with growing economic activity. Historically, Russia has seen itself as a European power, but the ongoing geopolitical dynamics are pushing it toward Asia.

The Power of Indo-US Collaboration
Jaishankar highlighted the compelling case for increased collaboration between India and the United States. He noted that historically, national security concerns had caused suspicion between the two nations, but today, the national security sector is most enthusiastic about deepening bilateral cooperation.
Addressing Discrimination Allegations
Responding to concerns about alleged discrimination against minorities in India, particularly criticism from American politicians, Jaishankar acknowledged that some individuals hold strong views driven by various factors, including electoral and cultural considerations. However, he emphasized India’s deeply pluralistic culture and the ongoing transformation within the country. India is implementing a social welfare system in a society with an income of less than USD 3,000 per capita, a groundbreaking achievement that addresses issues related to housing, healthcare, food, finance, education, and health access.
Jaishankar’s visit to Washington, D.C., is part of his five-day official trip, during which he met with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken. This interaction marks a significant step in bilateral relations, following the recent G-20 Summit in New Delhi, where President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Narendra Modi convened. Jaishankar’s visit underscores the importance of diplomacy in addressing global challenges and fostering cooperation between nations.
