
India’s High Commissioner Faces Disruption at Scottish Gurudwara
In a disturbing incident, the Indian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Vikram Doraiswami, encountered disruptions as radical Sikh activists allegedly prevented him from entering a Gurudwara in Glasgow, Scotland. The High Commission of India swiftly responded, terming the incident ‘disgraceful.’
Deliberate Disruption of Interaction
On September 29, 2023, a planned interaction organized by the Gurudwara Committee for the community, featuring the High Commissioner and the Consul General of India, was deliberately disrupted by three individuals from outside Scotland. This interaction aimed to address community and consular issues.
Organizers and Community Leaders Threatened
The event’s organizers included senior community leaders, women, committee members, and a member of the Scottish Parliament. Shockingly, they were subjected to threats and abuse by the disruptive elements. To prevent potential altercations, the High Commissioner and Consul General chose to leave the premises shortly after their arrival.

Attempted Violence Towards High Commissioner
The situation escalated when one of the non-local extremist elements allegedly attempted to violently force open the door of the High Commissioner’s car. Fortunately, one of the organizers intervened swiftly, preventing a more significant incident from unfolding.
High Commission Takes Swift Action
Expressing strong disapproval of the incident, the High Commission of India promptly reported the disgraceful incident to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and the Metropolitan Police. Additionally, multiple community organizations, including the event organizers, formally expressed regret over the incident and urged the authorities to take appropriate action against the culprits.
High Commissioner’s Scotland Visit
The incident occurred towards the end of a two-day visit by the High Commissioner to Scotland. During this visit, he engaged in a series of meetings and discussions with local political leaders, diaspora representatives, business leaders, and university groups.
Ongoing InvestigationHigh Commission Takes Swift Action by Police
The Glasgow Police were alerted to the situation at approximately 1:05 pm on Friday, September 29, in the Albert Drive area of Glasgow. Thankfully, there were no reported injuries. An ongoing police investigation seeks to establish the full circumstances surrounding this disruption.
