Indian Stock Market Opens Sharply Higher, Sensex Jumps Over 400 Points, Nifty Tops 22,500

MUMBAI, October 5, 2026 [VoM News]: Indian stock markets opened sharply higher Monday, with the Sensex gaining more than 400 points and the Nifty 50 climbing above 22,500 as investors tracked easing crude oil prices, global cues and the Reserve Bank of India’s monetary policy meeting.

BSE Sensex started at 72,340.95, up by 431.25 points; NSE Nifty 50 began trading at 22,532.40, gaining 110.45 points. After eight consecutive weeks of decline on these benchmarks, there was a rebound.

Some of these companies like HDFC Bank, Reliance Industries, Bajaj Finance, Punjab National Bank, Shriram Finance and ITC are trading up at first day. Laggard companies like Infosys, Apollo Hospitals and Max Healthcare are mentioned here.

While this is happening, the RBI’s six-member Monetary Policy Committee started a three day meeting on Monday, with an interest rate decision planned for Wednesday, October 7. Currently, the benchmark repo rate is 5.25%.
The markets are keeping an eye on whether to raise the repo rate by the central bank due to rising inflationary pressure. According to a Reuters survey, about 60 percent of economists predicted an increase of 25 basis points.

The Indian Consumer Price Index was at 4.82 percent for August due to high commodity prices and currency pressures on the rupee which are causing concern about future inflation rates.
Although there are still some issues between countries of the middle east; lower rates on oil products and less worry over aggressive US interest rate hikes helped stocks at home during opening day.
