Indian Railways Transforms Abandoned Coaches into Unique Rail Coach Restaurants
Indian Railways is embarking on a novel venture, converting two disused railway coaches into theme-based restaurants at Katra and Jammu railway stations. This innovative initiative, aptly named “Beautiful Restaurants on Wheels,” seeks to breathe new life into old train coaches, transforming them into charming rail coach restaurants. This creative endeavor has garnered excitement and anticipation among both travelers and locals alike.
A Culinary Transformation Awaits at Jammu and Katra Railway Stations
Two rail-coach restaurants are currently under development, one in Jammu and the other in Katra. This visionary project is being realized through collaborations with private entities, as tenders have been awarded to two different parties. The Divisional Transportation Manager, Prateek Srivastava, shared that these two AC restaurants are expected to generate an annual revenue of Rs 50 lakh.
Under this ingenious plan, the Indian Railways is offering these coaches to private parties, allowing them to craft state-of-the-art restaurants that reflect their unique designs and concepts. The first coach restaurant, named ‘Annapurna,’ is slated to open its doors to eager diners by December. The transformation process will require 90 days to equip the coach with all the necessary facilities.
A Nationwide Trend: Rail-Coach Restaurants Gaining Traction
This trend of converting disused railway coaches into vibrant restaurants is gaining momentum across India. Similar initiatives have already taken off successfully at nine to ten major railway stations, including Jabalpur, Bhopal, Lucknow, and Varanasi. The two forthcoming restaurants at Jammu and Katra railway stations are expected to follow suit, offering both vegetarian and non-vegetarian delights, all within a fully air-conditioned setting.
Passengers and tourists alike are eagerly anticipating these unique rail-coach restaurants. Surjeet Singh, a traveler from Delhi, believes it will be a wonderful addition to the region’s charm, offering a distinct and novel dining experience right at the railway station. Rajiv Dwivedi, who visited the Mata Vaishnodevi cave shrine, commended the government’s initiative and expressed high hopes for the quality of the food.
These rail-coach restaurants are not merely about food; they promise to offer a holistic experience. Alongside stylish interiors and exteriors, they will feature display panels that provide virtual tours of various destinations in Jammu and Kashmir. Through captivating photos, they will showcase the rich cultural heritage of Dograland, inviting travelers to embark on a journey of culinary and cultural exploration.
