Shah, also known as “Monish Doshi Shah,” faces a serious legal predicament with charges that include one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and one count of operating an unlicensed money transmitting business. Indian Jeweller Faces Serious Charges in US: Sophisticated Customs Evasion Scheme Unveiled
Documents reveal that Shah utilized a complex modus operandi, instructing conspirators in South Korea to change jewelry labels to falsely indicate the origin as South Korea instead of Turkey or India. This enabled him to unlawfully evade the approximately 5.5% duty that would have applied if the goods were shipped directly from Turkey or India to the US. Fake invoices and packing lists further disguised the true nature of the transactions.
Illegal Financial Transactions Unfold in New York City’s Diamond District
Prosecutors assert that from July 2020 to November 2021, Shah operated several purported jewelry companies in New York City’s Diamond District, conducting illegal financial transactions amounting to millions of dollars. Using entities like MKore LLC, MKore USA Inc., and Vruman Corp, he allegedly facilitated cash-to-check or wire transfer conversions for customers.
Unregistered Money Transmitting Businesses and Fee Charging Practices
Notably, none of Shah’s or his conspirators’ companies were registered as money transmitting businesses with relevant authorities. Shah and his associates allegedly moved significant amounts of cash in a single day, charging fees for their services. The case underscores the intricate nature of the charges and the elaborate financial network allegedly established by Shah in the course of his operations.
