Indian-American Industrial Leader Foresees $1 Trillion Contribution from India’s Disability Sector by 2047
In a recent meeting with top leaders in India, Pranav Desai, the founder of the Voice of Specially Abled People, presented a vision for India’s specially-abled population to actively contribute USD 1 trillion to the country’s economy by 2047. Desai emphasized the need for a comprehensive Tax Incentives Package to empower divyangjan (specially-abled persons) and jump-start economic activities in the disability sector. The proposal received a positive response from leaders such as Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and BJP president J P Nadda. Desai’s vision document, titled “Viksit Bharat,” aims to transform the disability sector by focusing on economic growth and active participation rather than a welfare perspective.
Strategic Approach to Transforming the Disability Sector
Desai highlighted the strategic importance of viewing the disability sector as an economic driver rather than a traditional welfare perspective. The vision document outlines measures to improve accessibility, transportation, and active participation of specially-abled individuals. Desai also proposed mandates/recommendations for the hiring of divyangjan by government ministries and outsourced vendors, promoting their inclusion in various sectors. The focus is on leveraging the economic potential of the specially-abled population for long-term economic growth.
Collaboration with Government and Private Sector
During his visit, Desai engaged with leaders such as Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari and Priti Adani, chairperson of the Adani Foundation. Discussions with Gadkari addressed accessibility and transportation issues faced by individuals with disabilities, aiming to improve mobility. Desai is working on a memorandum of understanding with the Adani Foundation to create opportunities for employing persons with disabilities across various business units, potentially hiring up to 10,000 people from the disability sector for sectors like solar installation.
Inclusive Gujarat and Harnessing Potential
Meetings with Gujarat Chief Minister focused on creating an inclusive and accessible Gujarat, empowering specially-abled individuals, and harnessing their potential to contribute to the USD 1 trillion economic goal of the disability sector in Viksit Bharat by 2047. The collaborative efforts between the government and the private sector aim to drive economic growth while promoting inclusivity and diversity in various sectors.
