Indian Air Force’s Strategic Exercises: Showcasing Jointness and Integration
In a strategic move towards creating theatre commands, the Indian Air Force (IAF) is gearing up for three major exercises with a focus on demonstrating jointness and integration for future warfare. The first, VayuShakti-2024, is set to feature a major firepower demonstration in Jaisalmer on February 17. Various fighter aircraft, including Rafale, Su-30MKIs, LCA Tejas, Mirage 2000, and MiG-29s, will showcase their firepower capabilities, emphasizing joint efforts with elements from the Indian Army and Indian Navy.
Exercise Gaganshakti: A Pan-India Display of Air Power
The second exercise, Exercise Gaganshakti, planned for April, will activate the entire Indian Air Force across Ladakh to the Indian Ocean Region and from Bhuj to Arunachal Pradesh. This pan-India wargame, conducted once every five years, will involve fighter aircraft, transport planes, helicopters, drones, and the activation of the Sudarshan long-range air defense system. Su-30s and maritime role fighter aircraft squadrons will coordinate closely with naval assets, enhancing joint operations.
Tarang Shakti-2024: Multinational Collaboration on the Horizon
The third exercise, Tarang Shakti-2024, represents a historic milestone as the first-ever multinational exercise involving foreign air forces. With potential participation from German, French, Italian, American, and other friendly forces, the exercise aims to strengthen collaboration and interoperability. Planned for August in Jodhpur, final participation details are expected to be confirmed by June.
Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari’s efforts to increase jointness align with Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan’s broader agenda of enhancing integration in operations. These exercises underscore the IAF’s commitment to strategic readiness and cooperation on a global scale.
