India-Russia Relations Go Beyond Diplomacy and Economics: S Jaishankar Emphasizes Deeper Bond

During his official five-day visit to Russia, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar underscored the profound nature of the bilateral relationship between India and Russia. Addressing Indologists at St. Petersburg State University, Jaishankar highlighted that the connection between the two nations transcends mere diplomacy or economic ties.

Stressing the importance of the intelligentsia’s role and the contribution of scholars in nurturing this bond, Jaishankar emphasized that India and Russia continually strive to discover new connections and commonalities. He advocated for a direct understanding between the two countries, emphasizing the need to comprehend each other without external influence.

Jaishankar also reflected on India’s burgeoning economy, nearing the $4 trillion milestone, expressing aspirations for India to evolve into a developed country over the next 25 years. He defined a developed nation not solely in economic terms but as a country that cherishes its traditions, heritage, and culture.

His visit included a meeting with President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin in Moscow, reaffirming the enduring strength of ties between India and Russia. Despite Moscow’s actions in Ukraine, India’s stance remains one of diplomacy and dialogue to resolve the crisis.

India’s increased import of Russian crude oil, despite growing concerns in several Western countries, signals the stability of their trade relations amid global geopolitical tensions.
