India Ranks 108th on Gender Inequality Index 2022
India has been ranked 108th out of 193 countries on the Gender Inequality Index (GII) 2022, with a score of 0.437, as per the United Nations Development Programme’s Human Development Report 2023-2024.
Progressive Improvement in Gender Equality
Compared to the Gender Inequality Index 2021, where India stood at 122nd place with a score of 0.490, the country has shown significant progress, jumping 14 ranks on the GII 2022. Over the past decade, India’s rank in the GII has consistently improved, from 127th in 2014 to 108th in 2022.
Government Initiatives for Women’s Empowerment
The Ministry of Women and Child Development attributed this improvement to the government’s decisive agenda for women’s empowerment, focusing on policy initiatives for their socio-economic and political development. Initiatives include education, skill development, entrepreneurship facilitation, and workplace safety for women.
Government policies and legislation in these areas align with the ‘women-led development’ agenda, aiming to bridge gender disparities across reproductive health, empowerment, and the labor market.
Understanding the Gender Inequality Index
The GII measures gender inequality across reproductive health, empowerment, and the labor market. A lower GII value indicates lesser inequality between genders. It reflects the loss in potential human development due to gender-based disparities, ranging from 0 (equal achievements) to 1 (extreme gender disparity).
