India Monitors H9N2 Cases in China; Assures Preparedness for Health Exigencies
The Health Ministry of India is vigilantly monitoring the recent outbreaks of H9N2 avian influenza virus cases and increased respiratory illnesses among children in northern China. Despite the concern, the ministry has reassured that the risk to India from these developments is low.
Current Situation and Risk Assessment
- Low Risk to India: According to the Health Ministry, the current outbreaks in China pose a low risk to India. However, the situation is being closely watched.
- WHO’s Assessment: The World Health Organization (WHO) has indicated a low likelihood of human-to-human transmission and a low case fatality rate for H9N2 cases reported so far.
India’s Preparedness and Response
- Surveillance and Coordination: The need for enhanced surveillance in human, animal husbandry, and wildlife sectors is recognized, along with improved coordination.
- One Health Approach: India is adopting a holistic and integrated One Health approach to address health issues effectively.
- Health Infrastructure Development: Post-COVID, there has been a significant overhaul of health infrastructure under the PM-Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM) to prepare for current and future health challenges.
Proactive Measures and Discussions
- Directorate General of Health Services Meeting: A meeting was convened to discuss India’s preparedness against human cases of Avian Influenza, following the report of a human case of H9N2 in China to WHO last month.
- Global Monitoring: The WHO, since mid-October, has been monitoring the rise in respiratory illnesses among children in northern China. They have officially requested more data from Beijing.
International Context and China’s Response
- The UN health agency’s request for more information from the Chinese government remains pending, with no public comment from Beijing as of now.
The Indian Health Ministry’s statement reassures the public of the government’s vigilance and preparedness to handle any public health emergencies that may arise from the current situation in China. The ongoing global monitoring and coordination efforts, coupled with India’s strengthened health infrastructure, aim to ensure effective response and mitigation of any potential health risks.
