PUNE, Oct 26: India faced their first home Test series defeat in 12 years after New Zealand sealed a historic 113-run victory in the second match. This marked New Zealand’s first-ever series win in India since they began touring in 1955.
Mitchell Santner emerged as the star for New Zealand, taking 13 wickets across both innings, including a decisive 7/53 in the first. Indian batters, long considered adept at playing spin, struggled under his control. India was dismissed for 245 while chasing 359, with Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 77 and Ravindra Jadeja’s 42 offering the only notable resistance.
India’s batting collapse started in the previous Test in Bengaluru, where they were bowled out for 46. Despite a strong home record, this defeat marked India’s first home series loss since 2012-13, when England won. The defeat also snapped India’s 18-series unbeaten streak at home.
The loss dents India’s standing in the World Test Championship (WTC), where they remain on top but with a reduced points percentage of 62.82. Australia, with 62.50%, is now hot on their heels ahead of the upcoming Border Gavaskar Trophy.
Jaiswal’s aggressive 77 off 65 balls was a lone bright spot in India’s second innings. Despite his fight, Indian batting crumbled against Santner’s precision, with key players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli failing to mount significant contributions. T
he collapse from 81/1 to 245 all out sealed India’s fate as New Zealand celebrated a historic triumph.
