India Honoured with Measles and Rubella Champion Award for Public Health Efforts
India has received the prestigious Measles and Rubella Champion Award in acknowledgment of the country’s relentless efforts to combat these infectious diseases. The award was presented by the Measles and Rubella Partnership at the American Red Cross Headquarters in Washington DC on March 6.
India Honoured with Measles:Dedication to Public Health Recognized
The Measles and Rubella Partnership, comprising a multi-agency planning committee including the American Red Cross, BMGF, GAVI, US CDC, UNF, UNICEF, and WHO, recognized India’s unwavering commitment to public health and outstanding leadership in curbing the spread of measles and rubella among children.
India Honoured with Measles:Regional Leadership and Comprehensive Interventions
India’s efforts were further highlighted for providing regional leadership to the measles and rubella elimination program, using “measles as a tracer” to strengthen routine immunization under the Universal Immunization Programme (UIP). Despite challenges, India demonstrated significant progress in reducing cases and preventing outbreaks through comprehensive interventions.
India Honoured with Measles:Proactive Vaccination Campaigns and Robust Surveillance
The Government of India’s proactive measles-rubella vaccination campaign in high-risk areas, innovative strategies to reach underserved populations, robust surveillance systems, and effective public-awareness initiatives played a crucial role in safeguarding the health and well-being of the population.
India Honoured with Measles:Testament to Dedication and Hard Work
The award serves as a testament to the dedication and hard work of India’s frontline health workers, healthcare professionals, policymakers, and communities across the nation. Notably, 50 districts consistently reported no measles cases, while 226 districts did not report rubella cases in the last 12 months.
Measles and rubella are vaccine-preventable diseases, and the MR vaccine has been part of the Universal Immunization Programme since 2017. The Indian government is actively working towards eliminating measles and rubella from the country, aiming for sustained progress in public health.
