India Hits Record 250 GW Power Demand, Showcasing Energy Sector Resilience
Key Highlights:
- India meets record power demand of 250 GW on May 30.
- Northern region achieves peak demand of 86.7 GW.
- All-time high thermal generation of 176 GW during non-solar hours.
In a significant achievement for India’s power sector, the country met a record maximum power demand of 250 GW on Thursday, May 30. Additionally, the non-solar demand reached an all-time high of 234.3 GW on Wednesday, driven by weather-related loads and increasing industrial and residential power consumption, the Ministry of Power announced.
The Northern region hit a peak demand of 86.7 GW, while the Western region achieved its maximum demand of 74.8 GW. Furthermore, India’s thermal generation reached an unprecedented peak of 176 GW during non-solar hours. This was largely due to the strategic implementation of Section 11, which maximized generation from imported coal and gas-based plants, highlighting the capacity and efficiency of the country’s thermal power plants.
Support from renewable energy sources, especially solar during daylight and wind during non-solar hours, played a crucial role in meeting this high demand. These achievements reflect the coordinated efforts of various stakeholders in the power sector, including government agencies, power generation companies, and grid operators.
The Ministry of Power emphasized that these milestones underscore the nation’s enhanced generation capacity and operational efficiency. The combined efforts to optimize resource allocation and implement strategic policies have been instrumental in meeting India’s growing energy needs, ensuring a resilient and reliable power supply.
