National Cybersecurity Coordinator MU Nair highlighted a worrying trend in India’s digital landscape, noting that the country has experienced nearly double the global average of cyber incidents in recent months. Speaking at the Synergia Conclave 2023, Nair underscored the increasing frequency and severity of these incidents.
Rising Ransomware Attacks and Underreporting
Nair pointed out that ransomware attacks have become a significant threat, with payments averaging USD 1.54 billion over the past 10 months, doubling since 2022. He emphasized that these figures represent only a fraction of the actual situation, as many incidents go unreported.
India’s Cybersecurity Challenge
In a startling revelation, Nair stated that Indian cyberspace has witnessed an average of 2,127 cyber incidents in the past six months, far exceeding the global average of 1,108. This statistic highlights the urgent need for enhanced cybersecurity measures and awareness in India.
International Collaboration and Initiatives
Nair called for global cooperation to address and mitigate cyber threats. He referred to various international initiatives, including those under the UN and regional forums, which aim to develop comprehensive solutions for cyberspace challenges that transcend national boundaries. He particularly mentioned the UN Group of Governmental Experts (UN GGE) on advancing responsible state behavior in cyberspace, whose contributions are significant in shaping international cybersecurity norms and principles.
