India Extends Emergency Relief to Nepal Following Earthquake Tragedy

India has taken swift action in providing essential relief to Nepal in response to a devastating earthquake that occurred on November 3, resulting in over 150 fatalities. The Indian government dispatched the first consignment of relief materials worth ₹10 Crore to Nepalgunj via a C-130 transport aircraft of the Indian Air Force. The relief materials include tents, tarpaulin sheets, blankets, sleeping bags, essential medicines, and medical equipment, such as portable ventilators.

Support Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Commitment

The provision of aid to Nepal is a continuation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to assisting the country following the earthquake in Jajarkot. Indian Ambassador Naveen Srivastava formally handed over the relief materials to Nepal’s Deputy Prime Minister Purna Bahadur Khadka in the presence of Karnali Chief Minister Raj Kumar Sharma. Additional consignments of relief materials are expected to arrive in Nepal in the days ahead.

India’s Neighbourhood First Policy

India has consistently demonstrated its commitment to its “Neighbourhood First” policy by offering emergency assistance to earthquake-affected areas in Nepal. India has been a dependable first responder to crises in the region. In 2015, after Nepal’s earthquake, India initiated its largest-ever disaster relief operation abroad, named Operation Maitri. As part of long-term assistance, India provided $1 billion to Nepal for post-earthquake reconstruction, encompassing housing, education, health, and cultural heritage sectors, which included the reconstruction of 50,000 houses in Gorkha and Nuwakot districts.
