India secured a thrilling 4-2 victory against Great Britain in a penalty shoot-out, advancing to the semifinals of the men’s hockey event at the Paris Olympics on Sunday. Despite being down to 10 men for more than 40 minutes, the Indian team showcased exceptional resilience and determination to make their second consecutive semifinal appearance at the Games.
The turning point of the match came when Amit Rohidas was shown a red card for raising his stick against a Great Britain player, leaving India with one player short. However, the Indian defense, led by veteran goalkeeper PR Sreejesh, stood firm.
Sreejesh, playing in his final international tournament, delivered a stellar performance, making numerous crucial saves to keep his team in the game.
India initially took the lead in the 22nd minute when Harmanpreet Singh converted a penalty corner, putting them ahead 1-0. Great Britain responded quickly, equalizing in the 27th minute through Lee Morton’s field goal.
With Rohidas, a key defender and India’s first rusher, off the field, Great Britain relentlessly attacked, seeking to capitalize on their numerical advantage. But India, despite the odds, held on and forced the match into a penalty shoot-out.
In the shoot-out, India’s composure and skill shone through as they outclassed Great Britain 4-2, securing their place in the semifinals.
The win marks another significant achievement for Indian hockey, with the team now just one step away from the finals at the Paris Olympics.
