INDIA Alliance to Champion Women’s Reservation Bill Implementation: Sonia Gandhi
Former Congress president Sonia Gandhi, at the DMK’s Women’s Rights Conference, underlined the commitment of the INDIA alliance to push for the effective implementation of the recently passed Women’s Reservation Bill. She commemorated the trailblazing work of her late husband, Rajiv Gandhi, in introducing the historic 33% reservation for women in Panchayati raj (local self-governments), which catalyzed the emergence of women leaders at the grassroots level.
Gandhi acknowledged that this was a pivotal milestone in the journey toward achieving similar reservation in legislative bodies – an initiative pioneered by the Congress both within and outside Parliament. With the recent passage of the Women’s Reservation Bill, she credited the relentless efforts of all stakeholders, transcending party lines. However, she also expressed caution, asserting that there is still a significant distance to cover.
Sonia Gandhi’s Strong Pledge at DMK’s Women’s Rights Conference
The critical question of when and how the Bill would be implemented remains uncertain, prompting Gandhi to emphasize that while some men may be content, women are not. She declared their unwavering commitment to fight for the realization of the Women’s Reservation Act.
The Women’s Reservation Bill, first introduced during UPA-II, had successfully passed the Rajya Sabha but faced obstacles in the Lok Sabha due to a lack of consensus. Sonia Gandhi’s resolute stance highlights the continued importance of this issue, not just to her party but to all those who advocate for gender equality and women’s empowerment in India.
Empowering Women: A Struggle for Implementation
Sonia Gandhi reiterates the INDIA alliance’s dedication to the Women’s Reservation Bill, emphasizing its significance in achieving gender equality and empowering women in politics.
