The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has transferred the nikah case of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi to Additional District and Sessions Judge Muhammad Afzal Majoka, as reported by ARY News. The transfer followed objections raised by Bushra Bibi’s former husband, Khawar Manika, against Session Judge Shahrukh Arjumand.
Session Judge Arjumand wrote to the Chief Justice of the Islamabad High Court requesting the case transfer. Manika’s lawyer had requested the transfer during a hearing on May 29, expressing a lack of confidence in Judge Arjumand. The transfer plea was approved, and Judge Majoka will now hear the appeals against the sentences in the nikah case.
Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi married in Lahore in February 2018. The wedding was attended by close relatives and friends, though Imran Khan’s sisters were not present. Mufti Saeed performed the nikah with former PTI leader Awn Chaudhary and former SAPM Zulfi Bukhari as witnesses.
In 2023, Khawar Manika approached the court, calling the marriage illegal and against Sharia law, accusing the couple of marrying within the three-month “iddat period” following a divorce. Manika also accused them of fornication. Consequently, Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi were sentenced to seven years imprisonment and fined PKR 500,000 each by Judge Qudratullah.
In May, PTI lawyers were booked following an alleged attack on Khawar Manika outside a courthouse. The incident occurred during a session presided over by Judge Shahrukh Arjumand, where Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi’s appeal against their conviction was under consideration. The lawyers involved are facing charges of terrorism and additional counts for attempting to intimidate and manipulate judicial proceedings.
