ICMR Study Finds COVID-19 Vaccination Doesn’t Increase Unexplained Sudden Deaths in Young Adults
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) conducted a study indicating that COVID-19 vaccination does not elevate the risk of unexplained sudden death among young adults in India.
Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya informed Parliament that post-hospitalization due to COVID-19, factors like family history of sudden death and certain lifestyle behaviors were linked to unexplained sudden deaths.
Addressing concerns about a connection between COVID vaccination and incidents of heart attacks, Mandaviya stated that while sudden deaths have been reported in some post-COVID cases, there isn’t sufficient evidence to confirm the cause.
The ICMR’s National Institute of Epidemiology conducted a study titled “Factors associated with unexplained sudden deaths among adults aged 18-45 years in India.”
The study included data from 47 tertiary-care hospitals across 19 states and Union territories.
The study observed that receiving at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine lowered the odds for unexplained sudden death among young adults.
Mandaviya highlighted that two doses of a vaccine further decreased the odds of unexplained sudden death.
The nationwide adverse event following immunization (AEFI) surveillance system continuously monitors reports of vaccine-related AEFIs, and there is no direct signal linking heart attacks to COVID vaccines.
The ICMR is not currently conducting studies on potential risks associated with COVID-19 vaccines in children.
However, studies on the immunogenicity and safety of vaccines like BBV152 and Corbevax in healthy children have shown positive results with no serious adverse events reported.
