Huge Traffic Congestion at Himachal Atal Tunnel as 28,210 Vehicles Navigate Through in a Single Day
During the extended Christmas weekend, Atal Tunnel experienced a surge in traffic as thousands of tourists flocked to Himachal Pradesh. According to police reports, a remarkable 28,210 vehicles traversed the 9.02-kilometer-long tunnel in the past 24 hours.
The data revealed that more than 14,000 vehicles originated from Himachal Pradesh, while over 13,000 vehicles arrived from regions beyond the hilly state. The Atal Tunnel, also recognized as the Rohtang Tunnel, is a major highway tunnel situated beneath the Rohtang Pass on the Leh-Manali Highway in Himachal Pradesh. Positioned at an elevation of 3,100 meters (10,171 ft), it holds the distinction of being the longest tunnel above 10,000 feet globally.
On Sunday, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu extended a warm welcome to all tourists exploring the “enchanting” landscapes of Himachal Pradesh. He encouraged visitors to revel in the beauty of the state, from its snow-capped peaks to serene valleys. The Chief Minister reassured the public that the administration and police are dedicated to ensuring a safe, enjoyable, and truly memorable visit.
Mr. Sukhu expressed appreciation for the Lahaul & Spiti and Kullu Police, commending their “outstanding dedication” in managing the substantial influx of tourists.
