Gulmarg Welcomes 10k Tourists in a Festive Winter Extravaganza
Gulmarg, the famed ski resort, embraced a picturesque winter setting, drawing approximately 10,000 tourists on Christmas Eve. The snowy landscape resonated with joyous revelry, as locals and visitors, both domestic and international, immersed themselves in the festive ambiance. This snowfall not only enhanced the scenic allure but also contributed significantly to Gulmarg’s economic vitality.
Javeed Ahmed, Assistant Director of Tourism in Gulmarg, highlighted the record 10,000 tourist count on Christmas Eve, with a notable increase in foreign visitors. He expressed optimism about an upsurge in foreign arrivals as the winter activities unfold.
Ahmed revealed that Gulmarg welcomed 4,912 visitors on Sunday, followed by 4,828 on Monday, marking a robust start to the season. With a cumulative total of 16,000 tourist arrivals thus far, the region anticipates a substantial increase in footfall, preparing for a successful season.
Anticipating a surge in daily visitors to rise from the current average of 5,000, Gulmarg is gearing up for a vibrant New Year, according to the Assistant Director of Tourism.
Despite the heightened demand, the hospitality sector, including hotels and guesthouses, efficiently accommodated the surge, showcasing Gulmarg’s capacity to host a large influx of tourists, as per officials.
During a Christmas celebration at Gulmarg, Raja Yaqoob, Director of Tourism, highlighted the department’s preparedness for the New Year and expressed joy witnessing predominantly foreign tourists exploring the valley.
Yaqoob mentioned that while Pahalgam is nearing full capacity, Sonamarg, open for winter tourism for the first time, is also witnessing increased tourist arrivals, adding to the positive developments during the festive period.
“This time, the valley is witnessing a significant presence of foreign tourists, which is a delightful moment for all of us,” remarked the Director of Tourism.
Saint Mary’s Church hosted a cheerful event during the festive celebrations led by Father Eric and Father Venoo. Community members gathered to offer prayers in accordance with their religious traditions, and a ceremonial cake-cutting further added to the festive spirit, attended by officials and stakeholders alike.
