Gulmarg Becomes a Premier Tourist Destination with Record Visitation
Gulmarg, a renowned ski resort, has witnessed a remarkable surge in tourism, attracting nearly 14 lakh visitors in just the first ten months of the year. This includes 9,000 international visitors and approximately four lakh local tourists, signaling a significant boost to the tourism sector in the region.
Enchanting Location and Major Attractions
Nestled in the Pir Panjal range of the Western Himalayas at an altitude of 8,690 feet, Gulmarg is known for its picturesque beauty. The name Gulmarg, translating to ‘Meadow of Flowers’ in Kashmiri, is fitting given its scenic landscape adorned with snow-capped mountains, green pastures, vibrant meadows, deep valleys, and pine-covered slopes. Surge in Tourist Numbers
The Directorate of Tourism reports a significant increase in tourist footfall from January to October, with 1,380,273 visitors, including 993,456 domestic tourists, 377,921 locals, and 8,896 foreigners. This remarkable influx is a positive sign for local businesses and the tourism industry, which have faced challenges in recent years.
Local Response and Economic Impact
The local community has welcomed this uptick in tourism with optimism, citing the potential for continued growth due to upcoming events and cultural programs. The snowfall in Gulmarg and surrounding areas like Tangmarg, Boothapathri, Kongdori Peak, Affarwath Peak, and Babareshi has added to the allure, drawing tourists eager to experience the winter wonderland.
Hoteliers and tourism sector representatives are experiencing a revival in business after a three-year lull. High occupancy rates in hotels and full bookings reflect the successful revival of Gulmarg as a top tourist destination. Local stakeholders, including residents and hotel owners, express gratitude for the effective promotional strategies by the tourism department and are optimistic about the future of tourism in Gulmarg.
