Guatemala Experiences 6.1-Magnitude Earthquake: No Casualties Reported
A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck southern Guatemala on Friday night, centered near the town of Taxisco. The quake, occurring at a depth of 108 kilometers, was felt in various regions, including the UNESCO World Heritage site of Antigua Guatemala. Fortunately, authorities report no casualties or material damage from the seismic event.
Monitoring and Response Efforts Underway
Guatemala, situated at the convergence of the Caribbean and Cocos tectonic plates, frequently experiences earthquakes. The country’s Seismology Institute recorded the tremor as measuring 6.0. While the earthquake triggered concerns, civil protection spokesman Rodolfo Garcia assured that, as of now, there have been no reported casualties or damages. Authorities are actively monitoring the situation at the national level.
Guatemala’s Vulnerability to Earthquakes
With 90 percent of its territory prone to earthquakes, Guatemala’s susceptibility to seismic activity is well-established. The geographical location, where tectonic plates meet, makes the region susceptible to such natural occurrences. The recent earthquake serves as a reminder of the ongoing seismic risks faced by the country.
