Government Slashes Petrol and Diesel Prices Ahead of Lok Sabha Polls
In a move aimed at providing relief to the public ahead of the anticipated Lok Sabha elections scheduled for April-May, the government has announced a reduction in the prices of petrol and diesel by Rs 2 per litre.
Reduction in Fuel Prices Effective March 15, 2024
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas revealed that Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have revised the prices of petrol and diesel nationwide, with the new prices set to take effect from 6 am on March 15, 2024.
Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, emphasized on X platform that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to decrease petrol and diesel prices underscores his commitment to the welfare and convenience of millions of Indians.
Impact of Price Reduction on Consumer Spending and Economy
The Ministry highlighted that the reduction in petrol and diesel prices will have a significant positive impact on various sectors of the economy. It mentioned that over 58 lakh heavy goods vehicles, 6 crore cars, and 27 crore two-wheelers running on diesel will benefit from reduced operating costs.
Furthermore, the ministry stated that the reduction in fuel prices will result in increased consumer spending, promoting tourism and travel industries, and helping control inflation.
The decision is expected to boost consumer confidence and spending, reduce expenses for businesses reliant on transportation, enhance profitability for sectors like logistics, manufacturing, and retail, and decrease costs for farmers using tractor operations and pump sets.
