Google has announced a $2 billion investment in Malaysia to establish its first data centre and “cloud region” in Southeast Asia, aiming to create 26,500 jobs by 2030, according to Al Jazeera. Farhan S Qureshi, Google’s country director for Malaysia, emphasized that the investment goes beyond infrastructure, unlocking new opportunities for businesses, educators, and Malaysians.
“This investment is not just about infrastructure; it’s about unlocking new possibilities for businesses, educators, and every Malaysian,” Qureshi stated in a blog post on Thursday. The data centre will support services such as Google Search and Google Maps and will enable the delivery of transformative AI capabilities across the country.
The new Google Cloud region will provide high-performance, low-latency cloud services to enterprises, startups, and public sector organizations. These services will include key controls for maintaining the highest security and compliance standards, including specific data storage requirements.
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim highlighted that the investment would add $3.2 billion to the country’s economy and create thousands of jobs by 2030. “The investment related to Google’s first data centre in Malaysia and the development of the Google Cloud region is proof that the Government’s clear planning in addition to the country’s economic strength and resources are attractive to existing and new investors,” Anwar posted on X, emphasizing Malaysia’s leading role in digital technology-based services.
This announcement follows Microsoft’s recent commitment of $2.2 billion towards artificial intelligence and cloud computing in Malaysia. U.S. tech giants have been increasing investments in Southeast Asia, a region with a young, tech-savvy population of 670 million and one of the fastest-growing economies. Consulting firm Kearney estimates that AI could contribute nearly $1 trillion to Southeast Asia’s GDP by 2030. Earlier this month, Amazon announced a $9 billion investment in Singapore to expand its cloud infrastructure, further highlighting the region’s significance in the digital economy.
