Google Pixel Users in Europe Gain Search Engine Choice
Pixel smartphone users in Europe are now finding an option to switch their default search engine, within the Pixel Launcher settings. This move is believed to align with the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA). Apple has also adapted to the DMA, supporting alternative app marketplaces and permitting third-party browsers to run their engines.
User Notification and Interface Change
Tipster Mishaal Rahman highlighted this development on X, citing Mastodon user screenshots. According to Rahman, users receive a notification from the Search Engine Selector app prompting them to choose their preferred search engine. Upon selection, the search bar icon reflects the chosen provider. Users can access the new setting option, “Search Engine,” either through the notification or manually via Pixel Launcher’s settings.
Expanded Search Engine Options
In the Search Engine menu, users can select their preferred search provider, affecting both search results and home screen content. Besides Google, other available options include Microsoft Bing, DuckDuckGo, Ecosia, and Perplexity AI, catering to diverse user preferences.
Google’s Compliance Measures
Google recently detailed its compliance strategy with the DMA, implementing over 20 product changes in search results and offering users the choice to share data across its services. The tech giant plans to introduce an “additional choice screen” for users to change default search engines or browsers. This feature rollout has commenced for Pixel users in Europe but awaits expansion to non-Pixel Android devices.
