Google Developing Phishing App Detection for Enhanced Android Security
Google is in the process of fortifying Android’s security measures with an upcoming feature aimed at identifying phishing apps to safeguard users.
This new feature, expected to be integrated into a future Android OS update, will scrutinize app behavior for deceptive activities, particularly phishing attempts. The system for detecting phishing apps is slated to function locally on Android devices, with pertinent details employed to alert other users regarding similar threats.
According to insights from Android Police, the recent rollout of the second Android 14 QPR2 beta version to testers revealed references to a forthcoming “scanning for deceptive apps” feature.
This functionality is anticipated to reside within the Security & privacy section of the Settings app, specifically under the More security & privacy sub-menu.
The envisioned system service will conduct scans on apps that prompt users to enter a password field. While genuine apps also solicit passwords, phishing endeavors aim to deceive users into entering their passwords on fraudulent platforms.
Currently, it remains uncertain whether the system will perform scans universally across all apps or solely on unfamiliar ones.
Moreover, another feature discovered in the works within the second Android 14 QPR2 beta version is the ‘Private Space’ capability.
This functionality appears designed to conceal apps from other users, offering a secure area for hiding and locking apps and files.
It might even enable users to obscure the usage of locking functionalities by requiring a specific term, “private space,” to be typed into the search bar on the app drawer.
While Samsung has previously offered a similar Secure Folder feature since 2017, Google’s potential incorporation of the Private Space feature across all Android OEMs could extend this functionality to numerous devices, benefiting billions of Android users worldwide.
