Google Begins Rolling Out Option to Change Primary Gmail Address Without Losing Data

Google has started a gradual rollout of a long-awaited feature that allows users to change their primary “@gmail.com” email address while keeping all data tied to their existing account intact.

Details of the update have appeared on select language versions of Google’s official support pages, confirming that users who switch to a new Gmail ID won’t lose emails, photos, messages or other stored content. The company says the change is designed to give users more flexibility without disrupting their digital history.

“The email address associated with your Google Account is the address you use to sign in to Google services,” Google noted on its support site. “If you’d like, you can change your Google Account email address that ends in gmail.com to a new email address that ends in gmail.com.”

Once the change is made, the old Gmail address doesn’t disappear. Instead, it’s automatically converted into an alias, allowing users to continue receiving messages sent to the previous address. Google added that account data, including emails sent to the old ID, remains unaffected.

Users will also be able to sign in to services such as Gmail, Google Maps, YouTube and Google Drive using either the old or the new email address, easing the transition.

The company cautioned that the feature is being introduced in stages, meaning it may not be available to everyone right away. “The ability to change your Google Account email address is gradually rolling out to all users,” Google said.

There are a few limitations. After creating a new primary Gmail address, users won’t be able to create another new one for 12 months. However, they can continue using the older address as an alias at any time.

Those eager to check whether the option is available can head to their Google Account settings, navigate to “Personal information,” and look under the email section.

While Google has assured users that their data will remain safe, it still recommends backing up important information before making the switch. Some app-specific settings, the company noted, may reset during the process.

For many users, the update marks a meaningful shift—offering a way to refresh a long-standing email identity without starting over.
