GMC Doda Nursing Interns Protest Alleged Burqa Restriction in Labour Room; Inquiry Panel Formed, Mehraj Malik Reacts

GMC Doda Nursing Interns Protest Alleged Burqa Restriction in Labour Room; Inquiry Panel Formed, Mehraj Malik Reacts

DODA, Oct 3, 2026 [VoM News]: Nursing interns at Government Medical College and Hospital Doda staged a protest after alleging that students wearing burqas were restricted from entering the Gynaecology Department’s labour room.

The interns alleged that a student was asked to leave the labour room over her attire and termed the action interference in religious matters. The protest was later called off following intervention by the hospital administration.

In-charge Medical Superintendent Dr Irfan Tassaduq said the issue resulted from a “miscommunication,” maintaining that students were asked to secure loose clothing and wear prescribed gowns in accordance with hygiene protocols for labour rooms and operation theatres.

The GMC administration has constituted an inquiry committee to examine the allegations and circumstances surrounding the protest. Reports differ on whether the panel has seven or eight members.

Doda MLA Mehraj Malik raised the matter with Health Minister Sakina Itoo, while NC spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq called for an investigation and respect for constitutional religious freedoms.
