Tamil Nadu’s decision to temporarily halt operations at Coromandel International Limited in Ennore followed a gas leak incident, affirmed by Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Meyyanathan Siva V. The shutdown, effective until further notice, was mandated by the state government.

Residents in Ennore, Chennai, experienced alarm on detecting an ammonia gas leak from a sub-sea pipe at Coromandel International Limited. Following the incident, five individuals who felt discomfort were swiftly relocated to a health facility. Fortunately, they are reported to be in stable condition.

Subsequently, officials from the Tamil Nadu Environment and Forest Department confirmed the containment of the gas leak, allaying concerns among residents. Authorities reassured that there were no further gas emissions in Ennore, with medical and police teams remaining on-site to ensure safety.

The ammonia gas leak occurred during the pipeline’s pre-cooling operation, as revealed by the department. Immediate action was taken by environmental engineers and safety authorities, promptly reaching the site for inspection.
