FSSAI’s AMR Action Plan Unveiled
The Central Advisory Committee (CAC) of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) revealed its action plan on Anti-Microbial Resistance (AMR) during the 43rd CAC meeting in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. Discussions centered on raising awareness among farmers about the prudent use of antibiotics in livestock, aquaculture, and poultry, aligning with FSSAI’s responsibilities under the AMR National Action Plan-IIFSSAI’s AMR Action Plan Unveiled
Promoting Food Safety and Hygiene
Efforts to develop ‘Healthy and Hygienic Food Streets’ were underscored, with directives issued to Commissioners of Food Safety of States and Union Territories to prioritize this initiative. Emphasis was placed on surveillance sampling and the need for states to devise surveillance plans, conduct regular meetings with state labs, and enforce cleanliness in marketplaces.
Strengthening Food Safety Infrastructure
Additionally, the meeting highlighted the importance of fortified rice and the necessity for regular sampling to ensure compliance with FSS (Fortification of Foods) Regulation, 2018. A Guidance Document for Training of Food Handlers in educational institutions’ canteens was introduced to enhance food safety infrastructure, aiming to train approximately 11 lakh food handlers within the next two years.
Uma Shankar Dhyani, Executive Director (HR & Finance), and Inoshi Sharma, Executive Director (Compliance Strategy) of FSSAI, participated in the meeting alongside over 50 officials, including Commissioners of Food Safety, representatives from States and UTs, and various stakeholders from the food industry, consumer groups, agriculture sector, laboratories, and research bodies. This collaborative effort signals FSSAI’s commitment to safeguarding public health and promoting food safety nationwide.
