Former Nepal Speaker Krishna Mahara arrested in gold smuggling case

Krishna Bahadur Mahara, former speaker of Nepal’s Lower House of Parliament and vice-president of the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre), has been arrested in connection with a gold smuggling case. Police confirmed his arrest in Kapilvastu district and his subsequent transfer to Kathmandu.

Police Action and Judicial Proceedings

Nepal’s Inspector General of Police, Basanta Kunwar, affirmed Mahara’s arrest and stated that he will be held in custody pending court approval. The Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister, Rabi Lamichhane, directed the police to act on the findings of an inquiry commission that implicated Mahara in the smuggling case.

Government Response and Commission Report

The inquiry commission, led by former High Court chief judge Dilli Raj Acharya, submitted a report to Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, suggesting Mahara’s involvement in large-scale gold smuggling. The government has committed to implementing the commission’s recommendations following a cabinet meeting.

Mahara’s arrest comes amid ongoing investigations into gold smuggling incidents, including a case involving his son, Rahul Mahara. The police had previously questioned Krishna Mahara’s ties to Chinese smugglers but had not interrogated him in connection with the case until now. Mahara’s position within the CPN-MC adds a political dimension to his arrest.
