Former Minister and senior BJP leader Syed Mushtaq Bukhari passed away on Wednesday at his home in Pamrote, Surankote, located in the Poonch district. Bukhari, 75, had recently been fielded as the BJP candidate for the Surankote constituency, a reserved seat for the Scheduled Tribes (ST) in Jammu.
Bukhari had a notable political career, having served two terms as a legislator from Surankote in the Poonch district. A seasoned politician, he was initially a close ally of National Conference (NC) president Dr. Farooq Abdullah.
However, after nearly four decades of association with the NC, Bukhari parted ways with the party in February 2022. His exit was primarily due to a disagreement with Abdullah over the ST status of the Pahari community.
Senior leaders, including Advocate Nadeem Rafiq Hussain Khan, a candidate from the Mendhar constituency representing the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), expressed their condolences on Bukhari’s passing. Other political figures also joined in mourning the loss of the veteran politician.
Bukhari’s death marks the end of a long-standing political journey, during which he remained a key figure in the region’s political landscape. His leadership and influence in Surankote, particularly among the Pahari and tribal communities, were well recognized.
His contributions will be remembered by many in the region, both in his role as a minister and a legislator.
The political community and the public in Jammu and Poonch are mourning his demise, with tributes pouring in from across party lines.
