Fleming Explains Holding Dhoni for Final Overs in CSK Match
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) coach Stephen Fleming explained why MS Dhoni is held back in the final overs rather than being promoted up the batting order, even after his impressive cameo against Lucknow Super Giants in the 2024 IPL. Dhoni joined the crease with just two overs remaining and CSK struggling at 142/6. In those 12 balls, Dhoni showcased his brilliance, scoring 28 runs off just nine deliveries, reminiscent of his iconic innings at Wankhede Stadium against Mumbai Indians.
Despite Dhoni’s stellar performance this IPL season, fans have been clamoring for him to be promoted in the order. Fleming disclosed that Dhoni is still recovering from knee surgery he underwent after last year’s IPL. “Dhoni’s batting has been inspirational this season. His skills in the pre-season were outstanding. Due to his knee recovery, he can only face a limited number of balls comfortably. We’d love to see more of him, but we have to manage his time in the tournament wisely,” Fleming stated in a press conference.
Dhoni’s onslaught against LSG’s Yash Thakur and Mohsin Khan delighted the fans, as he struck three fours and two massive sixes, lifting CSK to a total of 176/6. Fleming praised Dhoni’s ability to own the final overs and push the team to competitive scores. “Dhoni’s brief yet impactful innings is transforming the game for us. His entertainment factor is unmatched, and he truly is the heartbeat of our team,” Fleming added.
In the match summary, Dhoni’s cameo, along with Ravindra Jadeja’s unbeaten 57, set CSK up with 176/6. However, KL Rahul and Quinton de Kock’s 134-run opening partnership led the hosts to an 8-wicket victory.
