First MENA Solar Conference Showcases Cutting-Edge Solar PV Innovations

The inaugural Middle East and North Africa Solar Conference (MENA SC), a landmark event in the region’s solar energy sector, was held from November 15th to 18th, 2023, at the Dubai World Trade Centre. Organized by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), this conference brought together a host of global experts, researchers, scientists, and specialists. The focus was primarily on the latest advancements in solar photovoltaic (PV) technology, with a strong emphasis on enhancing the efficiency and performance of silicon photovoltaic systems while also seeking avenues for cost reduction.

Commitment to Solar Energy Leadership and Innovation

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of DEWA, reiterated the UAE’s commitment to solar energy, in line with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The goal is to position the UAE as a leader in solar energy competitiveness and energy efficiency. This commitment aligns with Dubai’s ambition to be a hub of innovation and an incubator for creators and innovators worldwide. It supports the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050, aiming to source all of Dubai’s power capacity from clean energy by 2050.

Exploring Advanced Solar Technologies and Materials

The conference delved into various topics, such as unconventional future technologies, silicon photovoltaic materials, Perovskite and organic solar cells, and the reliability of PV modules and systems in the MENA region. Discussions also covered solar resource forecasting, power electronics, and grid integration – all crucial for accelerating the shift to green energy.

Innovations in Silicon Photovoltaic Materials and Devices

A key focus of MENA SC was on improving silicon photovoltaic panels’ manufacturing and enhancing the quality of silicon wafers. The aim is to boost efficiency and energy output while minimizing costs. Topics ranged from silicon purity and thin-film deposition to high-efficiency devices, light management, loss analysis, and module field degradation.

Silicon Material, Interconnection, and Module Integration

Researchers presented papers on all aspects of silicon material treatment and production, exploring crystallization, wafering, slicing technologies, and alternative methods for producing silicon wafers. The conference also highlighted advancements in electrode formation, mechanical adhesion, multi-wire technologies, and the interconnection of advanced cell structures.

Advancing Device Physics and Characterization Techniques

MENA SC sessions focused on understanding and modeling phenomena in silicon solar cells, including interpretations of device physics, multi-dimensional models, novel cell concepts, power loss measurement, computational simulations, and new device characterization techniques. These discussions are vital for enhancing the efficiency and functionality of solar PV systems in the region, propelling the MENA area towards a more sustainable and green energy future.
