Expansion of Family Courts in Delhi: LG Approves 10 More Courts
In a significant move to address the backlog of cases in Family Courts, Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena has sanctioned the establishment of 10 more Family Courts. This decision brings the total number of Family Courts in Delhi to 31. The recommendation for this expansion was initially proposed by the full Court in 2019, acknowledging the need to expedite the resolution of cases pending for over 5 to 10 years.
Creation of New Judicial and Support Positions
With the formation of these additional Courts, there will be an establishment of 10 new positions for Judges to preside over them. Additionally, 71 other roles including Readers, Stenos, Senior PAs, Assistants, and more will be created. This expansion is aimed at enhancing the efficiency and functioning of the Family Courts in the city.
Alarming Pendency in Existing Family Courts
The necessity of this expansion is underscored by the current pendency of approximately 46,000 cases across the existing Family Courts in Delhi. The lowest pendency is recorded at the Principal Judge, Family Court in Saket with 1,321 cases, while the Family Court in Rohini faces the highest number of pending cases at 3,654. The Family Court in Dwarka alone sees an average registration of 150-200 cases daily, further stressing the urgent requirement for more Courts.
Strengthening IT Services in Delhi Prisons Department
In addition to the Family Courts, LG Saxena has also approved the creation of 10 additional posts in the IT cadre to enhance IT-enabled services within the Delhi Prison Department. This includes positions such as Senior System Analyst, System Analyst, and Data Processing Assistants. The financial implication of these new positions is estimated to be around Rs 1.02 crore annually. The creation of these posts has received concurrence from the IT, Administrative Reforms, and Finance Departments, indicating a multidisciplinary approach to improving the administration of justice in Delhi.
