European Union Energy Ministers to Discuss Rising Fuel Prices and Winter Supply Risks; Commissioner Dan Jorgensen Describes Situation as ‘Very Serious’

European Union Energy Ministers to Discuss Rising Fuel Prices and Winter Supply Risks; Commissioner Dan Jorgensen Describes Situation as ‘Very Serious’

LUXEMBOURG, October 29, 2026 (VoM News): Following the conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, oil prices have risen sharply, while concerns over energy security continue to grow.

To address these issues, European Union energy ministers are scheduled to meet in Luxembourg, where rising fuel prices and energy security are likely to be discussed, according to details available with VoM News.

As the bloc prepares for the winter heating season, the meeting will focus on immediate pressures affecting energy supplies and prices, alongside longer-term challenges, including the impact of climate change, the EU’s Transport, Telecommunications and Energy Council said.

Gas storage levels across the bloc stand at around 75 per cent of available capacity, compared with 83 per cent at the same time last year, raising further concerns and making these discussions significant.

Meanwhile, the European Commission has begun discussions with regional refineries to explore ways to increase fuel production, including the possible relaxation of certain technical specifications.

EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen described the situation as “very serious”, stressing that affordability was as important as securing sufficient energy supplies.

He warned that available supplies would offer little relief to households and businesses unable to afford rising costs.

European wholesale gas prices briefly reached €100 per megawatt-hour on Wednesday, their highest level since December 2022, when Europe was grappling with the loss of much of its Russian pipeline gas supply.

The talks are expected to address measures to ease immediate price pressures and strengthen the bloc’s preparedness for winter demand.
