ED Issues Ninth Summons to Arvind Kejriwal in Money Laundering Probe
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has issued a ninth summons to Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supremo Arvind Kejriwal in connection with a money laundering probe related to irregularities in the Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22 case. Kejriwal has been asked to join the investigation on March 21.
This latest summons comes after Kejriwal failed to appear for the eighth summons on March 4. The ED’s action follows the AAP leader’s physical appearance before the Rouse Avenue Court on Saturday in connection with the case, for which he was granted bail.
Legal Proceedings and Allegations
Kejriwal has been granted bail on a bond of Rs. 15,000 in response to complaints filed by the ED. The court has emphasized the importance of adhering to the law, especially for someone holding public office. Kejriwal has previously skipped eight summons, citing them as “illegal and politically motivated.”
The ED seeks to record Kejriwal’s statement regarding the formulation of the Delhi excise policy, pre-finalization meetings, and allegations of bribery. The case revolves around allegations of irregularities in the formation and implementation of the policy, which was withdrawn amid corruption allegations.
Background of the Case
The excise policy aimed to revitalize Delhi’s liquor business by introducing changes in licensing and sales practices. However, allegations of irregularities prompted a probe and the policy’s eventual scrapping. AAP leaders Manish Sisodia and Sanjay Singh are already under judicial custody in connection with the case.
Allegations and Accusations
The ED has alleged kickbacks worth Rs. 45 crore were used in the AAP’s campaign in Goa in 2022. Kejriwal’s purported involvement includes conversations with businessmen regarding AAP’s communications strategy.
Ongoing Legal Proceedings
The investigation into the case continues, with legal actions taken against individuals allegedly involved in irregularities surrounding the Delhi excise policy. The ED’s summons to Kejriwal marks another development in the ongoing probe.
