With approximately two minutes remaining in the first quarter, India seized an opportunity with a penalty corner. Nilakanta Sharma (14′) capitalized on the chance, scoring a goal from a rebound. Before Ireland could recover, the Indian Men’s Hockey Team swiftly added another goal through Akashdeep Singh (15′), concluding the quarter with a commanding 2-0 lead.
Victory for Indian Men’s Hockey Team: Gurjant Singh’s Brilliance Extends Lead
As the game progressed, Ireland sought to regain control but faced an impenetrable Indian defence. In the 41st minute, Ireland earned their fourth penalty corner, only to be thwarted once again by Amit Rohidas. Mandeep Singh orchestrated a brilliant chance for Gurjant Singh (38′) to extend India’s lead with a superb reverse-hit cross. Gurjant Singh delivered, sliding in to redirect the ball into the net, securing a 3-0 lead for India.
Despite a slight decrease in intensity in the final quarter, the Indian Team maintained precision in passing and retained possession. Ireland’s fifth penalty corner was expertly defended by PR Sreejesh. In the last minute, Jugraj Singh (60′) successfully converted a penalty corner, concluding the Rourkela leg with India triumphant over Ireland 4-0. The Indian Men’s Hockey Team is set to face Argentina in Antwerp, Belgium, in the next leg of the tournament on May 22, 2024. Currently at the third position in the table with 15 points, India has won three games, lost one, and drawn four, showcasing their competitive prowess.
